Structure & Superconductivity

Like Clark Kent, who often forgoes his social life to become Superman, materials that become superconducting must sacrifice at least one of their natural properties to attain the ability to transfer electric current with zero resistance. At the NSLS and Brookhaven’s Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN), a team of researchers has explored this internal conflict in a class of iron-based superconductors, materials that could be used to develop energy-saving applications such as high-efficient power lines.

Nanoscale phase competition accompanies colossal magnetoresistance

The CMR effect itself arises when the paramagnetic insulating phase yields to the ferromagnetic metallic phase. Now, Jing Tao of Brookhaven National Laboratory and her collaborators have found evidence that a charge-ordered, possibly antiferromagnetic phase plays a role too. Tao derived her results using a new technique, scanning electron nanodiffraction (SEND). The technique combines electron diffraction's ability to reveal the presence of ordered structures with scanning microscopy's ability to reveal those structures' real-space distribution.

Simultaneous Nanoscale Imaging of Surface and Bulk Atoms

UPTON, NY — Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, in collaboration with researchers from Hitachi High Technologies Corp., have demonstrated a new scanning electron microscope capable of selectively imaging single atoms on the top surface of a specimen while a second, simultaneous imaging signal shows atoms throughout the sample’s depth. This new tool, located at Brookhaven Lab’s Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN), will greatly expand scientists’ ability to understand and ultimately control chemical reactions, such as those of catalysts in energy-conversion devices...
