At Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Center for Functional Nanomaterials and the Department of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science, scientists Yimei Zhu and Dong Su simultaneously examined the crystal structure and electron structure of the interfaces in an atom-by-atom fashion based on ultra-high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy. These studies helped the multi-institutional team discover that the addition of a single layer of atoms at an oxide interface can drastically alter the conductivity of the material, from highly conductive to completely insulating, depending on the element used.
